Bilateral Symmetrical Brain Lesions in Tricyclic Antidepressant Overdosage

چکیده

Reprint requests to Dr. L.M. Sabet, Health Sciences Centre, Department of Pathology, London, Canada N6A 5CI. The pathophysiological effects and clinical features of overdosage with tricyclic antidepressants have been described in detail (Moraguerra, 1977; Petit, 1977; Bilgi, 1979). However, published accounts of morphological changes in the brain are scarce and lacking in detail. We are not aware of a clear description of distinctive lesions occurring as a result of overdosage with those widely used drugs. Previously published cases of fatal tricyclic antidepressant overdose in which the brain has been examined are summarized in table 1. Recently we have studied at autopsy a patient with distinctive brain lesions which appear to have been the result of selfadministered tricyclic antidepressant. This account is published so that others encountering such cases may establish if these are consistant findings.

Bilateral symmetrical brain lesions in tricyclic antidepressant overdosage.

The cerebral pathology in a case of tricyclic antidepressant overdose by amitriptyline is described. A review of the literature of similar cases is summarized. The relation of the cerebral lesions to the development of a hypertensive episode possibly induced by amitriptyline is discussed.

Antidepressant blood levels in acute overdose.

Plasma antidepressant levels and clinical condition were measured sequentially for at least 24 hr in eight patients who presented with acute antidepressant overdosage. There was no evidence to suggest that a knowledge of the drug plasma levels had anything to offer in the management of a patient whose overdose included a tricyclic antidepressant.

Polioencephalomalacia associated with closantel overdosage in a goat.

This report describes clinical and pathological findings associated with closantel (a halogenated salicylanilide anthelmintic) overdosage in a 3-year-old goat. No gross lesions were noted in tissue or organs at necropsy, but microscopic lesions were seen in nervous ...

Catecholamine levels in tricyclic antidepressant self-poisoning.

In a consecutive series of 208 patients with tricyclic antidepressant self poisoni ng, urinary catec holami ne excretion was measured, and the catecholamine level compared with that in ten patients having taken an overdose of other drugs. In both patient groups the electrocardiograph was monitored continuously for a minimum of 48 hours to detect cardiac arrhythmias. Urinary noradrenaline excret...

The case against memory consolidation in REM sleep.

We present evidence disputing the hypothesis that memories are processed or consolidated in REM sleep. A review of REM deprivation (REMD) studies in animals shows these reports to be about equally divided in showing that REMD does, or does not, disrupt learning/memory. The studies supporting a relationship between REM sleep and memory have been strongly criticized for the confounding effects of...
